Infection: It is more than likely an infection of either your tooth or your gums. Bacteria, puss, and infection can cause swelling that will go up and down in your gums if not treated. It can also cause pain as you mentioned. I'm not sure when your last cleaning was or if you've been to the doctors, but you will need to go so you can get properly diagnosed and a treatment plan to help you feel better.

Next time -->: It sounds like an infection that would require antibiotics and treatment. The sooner you get to a dentist the better. Untreated infections can cause serious complications! untreated dental problems only get worse with time, which in turn results in more pain, poorer prognosis & more costly. These things don't go away. Hopefully this won't be a big problem, but next time it could so don't wait!
