Welts after scratch: Dermatographism is a condition in which welts (hives) appear after one scratches the skin. There are cells in the skin called mast cells. These cells release histamine when one has an allergic reaction. This is why one takes anti-histamines for allergies. When one has dermatographism, these cells release histamine when they are irritated (by scratching the skin).
