Push fluids: Follow your son closely for signs or symptoms of concern like increased cough, shortness of breath, ear pain, bloody diarrhea. If the fever persists past a week i would recommend having him rechecked by his doctor.

Go back: A child with a fever for more than 5 days should have a thorough evaluation for infection. Most viruses won't cause fever for 5 days. Take the child back in to discuss blood tests, urine tests or x rays.

It happens: One of the best things you can do is what you already did,have him examined. Parents can certainly decide when the kid is ill.A doc that evaluates 3000+ kids a year can certainly decide which of those need additional testing or have a viral pattern.These are frustrating, but you can always go back in for a re-check. If it is still viral, and it can certainly be, at least you will sleep better.

Influenza: this is the season and yes it is a virus but it can be tested and treated with antivirals he needs to have a pcr test of the nasopharyngeal swab and should be treated he needs to be checked
