Respiratory issues: Difficulty breathing on exhalation with mucus production is commonly seen in asthma. Difficulty breathing on inspiration with a cough is commonly seen with vocal cord dysfunction. Some people have both. A physician can perform spirometry (lung function test) to assess and provide recommendations for a treatment plan.
