Maybe: Sometimes aspiration pneumonia can cause severe inflammation in the lungs and lead to a condition called ARDS (adult respiratory distress syndrome). Good questions to ask is 1) has the doctor been able to decrease your moms oxygen need 2) are their other organs that are not working well besides the lungs and 3) is she getting physical therapy while on the vent.
