Depends: I think this would greatly depend on the level of stress you are experiencing, how it is affecting your life, the triggers for that stress, and treatment options deemed to be best for you after careful evaluation. Sometimes a break from the stressful situation, sometimes time off work, can be extremely beneficial.

Good luck: That will likely cause more stress when your employer sacks you as cannot leave your spot empty for months w/o rationale. Medication and therapy help manage stress. Can get limited periods of time off reasonably to help get grounded and let meds start working, but most providers won't run that long, even if have a breakdown unless in psych hospital.
