My girl cousin is over weight but is bearly 18 years old...should she get the sleeve gastrectomy done? what are the complications of that surgery?

NOT Recommended.: 18 yo females are at a very delicate stage in their development. Surgery is not the best option. She should seek the advise of her primary md and begin a healthy eating and exercise program. At her age she should be able to loose weight easily, but if not then she might be a candidate for the new indication for metformin. Only her doctor can tell her this.

Maybe: It depends on a lot of factors. How overweight? Does she associated medical problems like diabetes or high blood pressure? A consult with a bariatric surgeon who has experience in pediatric patients will be able to tell you if surgery is the right option for your cousin. Bariatric surgery is not for everyone.
