Can be: The average age of menopause is 51 and menopause is defined as not having a menstrual period for 12 months. A woman can be "peri-menopausal" for 10 years sometimes where an egg is not being produced, releasing on a regular basis, and/or producing a normal amount of progesterone; which results in a skipped period at times or more frequent period at times.

Not really: The average age of menopause is 52 and the main symptom of menopause is fewer or absent periods. The bleeding pattern you describe is more likely caused by less consistent ovulation due to the fact that your ovaries used up the healthiest eggs when you were younger. If you are "back to normal" now it is unlikely anything serious is going on.
