Inhibits repolarization: The heart has a very synchronized depolarization and repolarization involving the transfer of of sodium and potassium ions. Potassium ions flood back into the heart during repolarization which is the resting phase between heartbeats if potassium levels are low this lengthens the resting stage and causes arrhythmias because there is a certain tiny mean mechanism set by the sa node pacemaker.
