May not be Alzheimer: Alzheimer's is a form of dementia but there is no way to diagnose alzheimer's with certainty except a brain biopsy. Your grandmother's dementia could have been due to her stroke or other causes. There is a hereditary tendency to alzheimer's but lifestyle factors can greatly reduce risk even in those with a strong family history. Mixed dementia: She likely possessed a dementia due to multiple small strokes, and possibly additional alzheimer's pathology, a mixed additive process. Risk factor for alzheimer's include similar risks for stroke, such as diabetes, hypertension, high blood lipids.

Many have both: Vascular dementia caused by strokes often co-occurs with alzheimer's . The risk factors and treatments often are the same.
