Specifically, a physician evaluates the patient's gait, range of motion, for swelling and other signs of inflammation; areas of tenderness and tests for signs of a ligament tear, cartilage tear or tendinitis. Knee exam: A good patient history will guide a physician in which special tests may be most appropriate for each patient. Physical exam includes visual inspection (and xray), palpation, and special tests. Thesselys test, like apley, mcmurray, and bounce tests, are all ways to inspect a knee for a meniscus tear. There are many special test for other structures as well.
