Not exposed: It could be that he has not been exposed to it when you have had an active lesion.

The tendency: To transmit depends on viral shedding. This is highest just prior and during an outbreak. The shedding of genital herpes may be diminished because u also have antibodies for oral herpes. I would consider valacyclovir 1 gm, 1/2 per day to further decrease shedding and thus risk. If he is worried using a condom could help; likely, w/o precaution, eventually he will get it, but he may not care.

Hsv-1 (which produces most cold sores) and hsv-2 (which produces most genital herpes) are ubiquitous and contagious. They are spread when an infected person is producing and shedding the virus. Your friend may be immune or a carrier.
