Pressure.: Hemorrhoids are outpouchings of the walls of the venous blood vessels in the anal area caused by high pressures in the region. Those pressures are usually caused by repeated abdominal straining such as with heavy lifting, childbirth and straining at stool.

Many causes: Hemorrhoids can be caused by straining, sitting on the toilet for a long time, lifting heavy things, or chronic constipation or diarrhea. In some people, they appear to be hereditary. This makes sense, since varicose veins, which are similar to hemorrhoids, are the same.
