Depends: A "bipolar 2 episode" happens to people who have bipolar ii disorder. These people have an internal vulnerability to mood episodes (depression or hypomanic episodes), independent of external events. A stressor can make an event more likely, but it doesn't cause the event -- the mood disorder is the primary reason the mood episode occurs.
