A member asked:

To transfer hiv, do u have to have infected blood on blood contact or infected blood on on open soar?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes, usually, but...: Yes, you are correct in that HIV infections usually occur with blood on blood contact or infected blood on an open sore. However, HIV can be transmitted by splash of blood/semen/vaginal fluid in intact mucus membranes (with no open sores), such as in the vagina, anus, urethra, inner mouth, or eyes. Thus, routine sexual contact may also transmit HIV without requiring blood contact or open sore.
