How long?: First try otc meds such as tylenol (acetaminophen) and or motrin. Most sciatic pain is self limiting and will improve with time but the symptoms can be painful and distressing. If otc meds are not helpful then see your doc to discuss other treatments. They may consider a steroid pack or stronger meds. Physical therapy is good first line treatment as well.

Gabapentin: Medicine like gabapentin, lyrica, (pregabalin) amitriptyline, cymbalta, etc can help. I would discuss your options with your doctor to see which medications are best for you. If the medications don't help enough then consider evaluation with a pain specialist to see if interventional treatments might be better options.
