Both related: The white stuff at the gum line is most likely plaque and calculus, which in fact would be the cause of the bleeding gums from periodontal (gum) disease, either gingivitis or worse, periodontitis. You need to see a dentist for a complete and thorough dental exam in order to determine what dental treatment is needed. Postponing treatment will only lead to more expense and damage & loss of teeth.

Likely Periodontiits: Always difficult to know for sure without a clinical and x-ray examination, but it sounds like you're overdue for a dental check-up and cleaning. The "white stuff" sounds like plaque--accumulations of bacteria which can cause infection of the gums and underlying bone. The bleeding is a common symptom. In any case, you need to see a dentist asap to have that checked. If not, it could get worse.

Gum disease: It sounds like you have not had a professional cleaning in several years. Bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease. This also creates a direct pathway for these bacteria to get into your blood stream and has been shown to cause heart disease and arterial disease. The white stuff could be either pus or plaque. In any event see your dentist now for a full evaluation. This is treatable and preventable.

ANUG: Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis has these classical symptoms. Also known as "trench mouth" , lack of oral hygiene and vitamin or nutritional problems are the cause. I recommend you see a dentist, asap.

Perio disease : Depending on your age and whether / not you have fever and malaise, it may be one of 2 things. Generalized periodontal disease or anug. Anug is very painful, smells bad, and you lose the gum tissue point between your teeth, among other symptoms. Periodontal disease may also have bleeding gums and accumulations along the base of the teeth. See your periodontist fot evaluation and treatment.
