Anytime: Metformin is a fairly long acting medication and can be taken twice daily. Most people take it breakfast and dinner. It does not make a difference if it is taken with food or not, but there tends to be fewer side effects, such as diarrhea when taken with food. There are sustained release forms that can be taken once daily.
