Assist device: Vad stands for ventricular assist device. You can also hear lvad or rvad which stand for left and right. They are implanted devices which assist the heart when it is failing. They are typically short term to allow the heart to recover or buy time to transplant. However, some are now being used for long term called destination therapy.
