Fungus: Most likely, you have separation of the nail plate and the nail bed, or skin under the nail. Normally this is attached until the very tip of the nail. However, trauma such has dropping something on the nail, or repetitive trauma of a nail left too long pressing against the shoe, can cause the nail to lift, and moisture get trapped beneath. Fungus then invades the area and separates the two.
