I : I agree with the other podiatrist's answer. If you keep playing with your toenail, they're gonna put you in jail for practicing without a license! the trauma you had broke one or more tiny blood vessels under your nail causing blood to accumulate between your nail plate and the nail bed. This pressure can cause pain if the blood is trapped there, and it also will cause the nail plate to separate from the nail bed and ultimately lead to the nail plate coming off. (by the time that happens, a new nail will already be growing under the old one.) i normally tell patients to leave it alone if it's not causing any pain. Since you are having pain, i would suggest you have the toenail removed. That will drain whatever blood remains there, relieve the pressure, and also address this ingrowing toenail you seem to have also. As a new nail regrows, it might be a good idea to put some goo on the area to keep it moist so that the new nail will grow over your skin rather than into your skin. Any "goo" will do... Bacitracin, neosporin, vaseline, or 10w40... Whatever you have around. Hope this helps!
