No: Over the counter and prescription cold medications are safe for children 6 years of age and older. You can feel safe using Normal Saline nasal spray and humidified air to help clear the congestion and improve the cough. If you son has worsening symptoms or fever take him to see his doctor for further evaluation.

Not recommended: Over the counter cough and cold preparations are not recommended in this age group. If his symptoms are just related to an uncomplicated cold, nasal saline and bulb suctioning the mucus will help reduce the cough. If the cough persists more than three weeks, or if the symptoms worsen, he should see his pediatrician.
