My grandfathers hand is swollen and numb at the fingertips. he can't even button up his shirt. what do you suggest?

You help him : Button his shirt, as i would do for my grandfather, or possibly velcro line the shirts so he can do himself. Alternatively, get a pull over shirt that he doesn't;t have to button.

See your doctor: Your grandfather may be suffering from an acute flair from pre-existing arthritis. Swelling causes increased pressure on the nerves in the hand and wrist and can result in numbness, tingling and loss of dexterity. Other conditions include tendonitis, trigger finger and polymyalgia rheumatica. See your doctor or hand surgeon for a comprehensive evaluation, which may include xrays and blood tests.

Not if your sane: There is no short answer. We need to know where, how often, how long he has had the numbness. What kind of work/hobbies he does.
