See Dr or Pulmonolog: As you describe, is likely #1, body tries to remove "stuff" from lungs w/constant escalator up & out--so winds up near vocal cords (not made there, #3) and causes cough / clearing issue. Pnd is when can't catch breath at night, so not likely. Albuterol / guiafenisin / other meds can help reduce symptoms, but should get exam by pulmonologist to help id source.

Mucus; congestion: Do you smoke? Smoking paralyzes cleansing function of respiratory tract hair cells; so mucus accumulates in bronchi, larynx, alveoli. Allergies can cause post-nasal drainage. Treating with nasal saline spray, nasal steroid spray, oral antihistamine (benadryl, zyrtec, claritin) may help. Sinus infection or upper respiratory infection/cold can cause much mucus. See fp if not better.
