Usually : Usually swelling and edema in the ankle can be treated with elevation along with ice, rest, and compression. Sometimes anti-inflammatories are recommended for pain associated with the swelling. If edema is not associated with an injury and/or bilateral, a workup for more systemic causes of edema should be performed.
