A member asked:

Can abcessed tooth cause gum swelling even in area where the tooth is not? i'm on meds from er called penacillion and.tynol codine

Yes: The infected fluids from an abscess may travel along lines or spaces of least resistance. The antibiotics should help within 48 hours. If not, and things progress, go see a dentist to sort out the specific problem and perhaps a different antibiotic. An er doctor is really ill equipped to diagnose the specific dental origin, so seeing the dentist is a better choice.

Yes, and seriously!: The medications you were given are a standard first line of defense against an infected tooth. Penicillin is a antibiotic designed to broadly attack the area of swelling, which usually coincides with the top of the root and outside of the gums. Finish your medication until completely gone to insure that the infection doesn't develp a resistance and return in greater force before dental treatment.

Yes: Swelling follows anatomical fascial planes.Depending or root length and location, swelling can occur at a distance away from the tooth.
