Debilitating?: I can't tell you if it is irrational or not. If you are constantly focused on fear of germs and decontamination that may be excessive. If the fear prevents you from engaging in normal activities or takes up too much space in your brain - then it may be irrational. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be helpful for this.

Some fear is normal: I agree with dr. Ciarmicoli. If it is excessive, it is irrational. We are all taught to wash our hands and practice good healthy habits. If you are obsessed with germs, it is irrational. Cognitive behavioral techniques in therapy should help.

Fear vs Phobia: A germ is a microorganism that may/may not transmit disease. A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of a thing, activity or situation that instills a powerful desire to avoid it germ phobias tend to interfere significantly w/ daily functioning. Exposure is actually the best idea...Living w/germs as most people do. Exposure therapy wouldn't involve risks considered dangerous by most people!
