Penicillin: How do you know it is strep throat? By culture or by rapid test in the dr office?Penicillins remain as the first choice treatment for streptococcal infections if not allergic to them. Many other antibiotics are useful too. Gargles with saline sol, topical anesthetics, analgesics (avoid aspirin) help.

Antibiotics: True strep throat requires antibiotics. You should see your doctor for specific treatment. It depends on your drug allergies, and whether you have had other antibiotics recently. Common antibiotics used are: amoxicillin, augmenting, clindamycin.
