Depends: If you have no allergies than good old penicillin still works well for strep throat. Otherwise a cephalosporin or macro lied are also good choices.

Amoxicillin: Is the first line drug by the book ( if you are not allergic to penicillin). In many communities, strep is gaining resistance to penicillins, so your doctor may recommend a cephalosporin like cephalexin.
