Numbness: One can have numbness due to swelling around the ankle. There is a superficial nerve on the lateral aspect of the ankle. Rarely it can be injured and cause numbness on the dorsum of foot. At this point you can watch it. If it persist then you can consult your orthopedist or podiatrist.

MANY things.: Generally when someone describes their pain the way you did, it's some type of nerve irritation. You probably injured a sensory nerve. See a podiatrist for a more detailed exam and diagnosis. Treatment may be very simple!
