I say ZERO: Most docs disagree, but the ideal dose is zero. Statins have never been shown to extend life by even a day & can cause serious side effects. Depends : The use of a statin or other lipid altering agent should be used in the context of that particular patients cardiovascular risk. In patients with genetic/inherited disorders of lipid metabolism, such as familial hypercholesterolemia (fh) those treated with statins reduce risk back to normal patients. For others, treatment depends on risk benefit profile. Preventing a stroke is a good thing.
