Acid reflux: This taste is also known as "water brash" and is commonly associated with acid reflux. Many people describe it as a sour taste. Do not lay down soon after meals, elevate the head of your bed/use pillows and avoid large/spicy meals to help cut down on similar symptoms.

also avoid fried, fatty foods (including chocolate), acidic foods/drinks like lemon, lime, OJ, soda pop, coffee: they relax the ring muscle at the end of the esophagus which tries to prevent stomach contacts from refluxing. some meds can cause heartburn (aspirin, Inderal, metoprolol, tetracycline); so take all meds with full glass of liquid (water, preferably) and don't lie down for at least 15 mi

Has anyone heard of or suffered from burning mouth?

Yes: This can be very troublesome. I had herpangina and this was the worst aspect of the illness (lasted for months), and many people have it much more severely. If no cause (hormones, meds, GI reflux, xerostomia / sjogren's) is found, a good multivitamin may help. Topical anesthetics and lozenge Clonazepam are used & sometimes it resolves by itself.

Black hairy tongue: It is a condition caused by lengthening of the filiform papilla of the tongue. This in turn can cause it to become stained easily by coffee, food or tobacco. It can also occur after taking pepto-bismol or can be a side effect from taking penicillin. Certain types of bacteria and yeast can also be a factor.
