Get follow-up care.: It may have been that you were given benzodiazepines because you were feeling very upset or even agitated. Suicidal thinking is very alarming. Certainly, you don't want to take benzodiazepenes long-term. But the most important thing is that you somehow got through the event, and can get the care you need to move on. Please be sure you have arrangements to see a counselor or therapist in follow-up.

Suicidal: Suicidal thinking with intent to carry out plans usually does require inpatient treatment, at least temporarily. Over the long haul, recovery from illnesses that may result in such plans requires consistent work in psychotherapy and with medications if these are prescribed. I can't comment on what you were given in the hospital or why, & hope your discharge plan included outpatient referrals.
