A relief, ideally: The experience of being admitted to a mental health unit varies depending on a number of factors. Patients can voluntarily accept admission or they can sometimes be involuntarily admitted if they are considered a danger to self due to a mental disorder. But, in both cases the staff tend to be caring, professional, and skilled at keeping you safe and on track for functioning and feeling better.

A relief, often: After attempting suicide (and also while struggling to contain such urges), many people find it a great relief to be hospitalized. Depending on the circumstances they can experience a safe place to discuss their difficulties, and have a team of people concerned about and responsive to them. Inpatient care can be a way to get started in treatment for the conditions leading to suicidal behavior.

Suicide: From the patients I have worked with over the years, I have heard it is often the most shaming, dehumanizing experience one can experience. With the appalling cheapening of healthcare, patient stabilization has become the edict of insurance companies; in other words, treat 'em and street 'em. This reality has little to do with proper care of people who are in agonizing pain.
