Your preference: There's little science here. Drink as much as you need to not be thirsty, and a few more glasses -- helps get rid of the salt that our diet is often loaded with. Extreme water drinking can render a person electrolyte depleted but this is difficult. If you have unexplained thirst, best get appropriate labs drawn.
