Fracture: You may have a fracture, some fractures of the ankle are stable enough to walk on if broken. It's important for you to get it elevated above your heart religiously. You could also have lateral ankle instability. If it doesn't improve in 4-6 weeks, i'd see a foot and ankle orthopedist.

Fracture/Sprain: You could have a fracture or sprain. See a podiatrist for radiographs to rule out a fracture and appropriate treatment which can include surgey, walking boot, cast or ankle brace. Elevate, ice and compression until you can be seen for further evaluation and care.
