Carrier state: This means that you carry one of the genes for thalassemia, but it has very little effect on your blood count. It may be transmitted to your children however. A single gene (allele) doesn't cause a problem, but if your spouse also had one of the alleles, then some of your children could develop thalassemia major which can be fatal.
