Absolutely: Both procedures are highly effective (in the 90% to 95% range) when done properly by a skilled dentist under the right conditions. They both enable you to save teeth that otherwise would need to be extracted. What would lead you to question its effectiveness?

Perhaps: The answer really lies with the technique in the sense that you need to evaluate the particular situation that the procedure is used in. If used correctly expect over a 50% success.

Both are effective: Keep in mind that removal of an infected nerve is only a precursor to additional treatment. A pulpotomy on a baby tooth will need a stainless steel crown to provide completed support and protection. An adult pulpectomy will need a completed root canal followed by a reinforced filling and ultimately, a crown to protect your investment. Neither is an acceptable completed treatment on it's own.

When indicated: Pulpotomy removes pulp tissue above yhe canals only. It is indicated in baby teeth when preservation is needed until the permanent tooth erupts. It is also performed on adult teeth to decrease pain quickly until a root canal can be done. A pulpectomy means total removal of all the pulp tissue in the tooth . This is the first part or root canal therapy followed by shaping and filling the canals.
