Remove the nerve: Nowdays, most root canal therapy can be done in one visit. However, in certain cases, dentists might decide to stop the pain or drain the infection first. Pulpectomy is the choice of treatment then. It involves opening an access of the tooth, removal of the diseased nerve(pulp) and gross cleaning of the root canal. It provide immediate improvement of the symptom and causes less time and money.

Deep Anesthesia : Following local anesthesia, center of the tooth is removed using the high speed drill. All upper pulp chamber contents are removed & washed clean. A cotton pellet with medication is placed in the chamber & a temporary filling is placed over the cotton to seal the chewing surface.

Nerve removal: A pulpectomy is basically an incomplete root canal. We basically numb the tooth, remove any decay, remove the nerve and infected tissue within the tooth, and then place a temporary filling. The second half which makes it a full root canal is permanently sealing the root to prevent the infection from returning.

Root canal stage 1: A pulpectomy involves making a hole in the tooth to acess the pulp (where the nerve and blood vessels are). The pulp is then removed and the space left over is disinfected and dried. It is common to then leave medicating paste inside the pulp space. A temporary filling is then placed until the final root canal filling is placed. A pulpectomy will help alleviate tooth pain and infection.
