Yes: These days, hsv1 is 2/3 oral and 1/3 genital; and hsv2 is 2/3 genital and 1/3 oral. Both viruses can be passed by kissing or by having sex. The reason for knowing which you have is because type 2 is more severe. The treatment is the same - Acyclovir or Valtrex (valacyclovir) - so it doesn't matter which type your have. It's just nice to know, because then you know how severe of illness symptoms to expect & treat.

Possible: Hsv is passed by direct contact. If the uninfected person has direct contact with the affected area of the infected person while that person is shedding the virus, then transmission can occur. If the infection does not involve the mouth/face, then kissing will not spread the virus.
