A member asked:

Can metformin be prescribed to a pcos patient who has normal sugars to help achieve pregnancy?

Proper evaluation: One of the most important topics concerning pcos patients is the question of “insulin resistance” as being the main cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome. This has led to many, many women being misdiagnosed and mismanaged. As a result, there has been a tendency to automatically prescribe metformin (glocophage). In reality, only 30-40% of these women have Insulin resistance.

Yes: Metformin has been used in polycystic ovarian syndrome to improve symptoms and the chance of achieving pregnancy even when a woman doesn't have diabetes or high blood sugar. This should be done under the supervision of a physician or midlevel provider to be sure blood sugar doesn't drop.
