AREDS/AREDS2 Vitamin: In 2001 the national eye institue (via nih) concluded that patients with high risk for armd (age related macular degeneration) who took "antioxidants plus zinc" had the lowest risk of developing advanced stages of armd. No inference that these vitamins would benefit all should be made! if your ophthalmologist indicates that you "are at high risk", then areds/ared2 labeled vitamins may be effective.

Depends: Patients at risk for macular degeneration are advised to increase the lutein & xeaxanthine in their diet from foods such as broccoli, spinach & kale, increase omega-3-fatty acids from fish oil or flax seed, increase the fruit and consider a once a day multivitamin. Patients with macular degeneration should do the same but be on a twice day areds vitamin depending in their doctor's recommendation.

AREDS for ARMD: The only commercially available vitamins shown through rigorous scientific study to be helpful are Preservision's AREDS or AREDS 2 formula or Macula Pro (same formula). It should be noted that the benefit has only been shown for patients with moderate age related macular degeneration
