Fundoplication : Surgery for gerd involves wrapping the top part of your stomach around itself recreating the 'valve' at the top of your stomach to prevent reflux. It often is done with a hiatal hernia repair where you tighten the opening in your diaphragm that your esophagus comes through. Can be done laparoscopically, robotically, sometimes endoscopically.

Fundoplication: The operation is generally called a fundoplication; the most common is called a nissen fundoplication. This wraps a portion of the stomach around the transition from the esophagus and the stomach to decrease the chances of stomach acid flowing back up into the esophagus, which is the crux of gerd.

Fundoplication: Lifestyle changes, weight loss, ppis, etc. Are prescribed. However, these do not cure/stop reflux. Laparoscopic surgery ("gastric wrap"/nissen fundoplication) on appropriate candidates may potentially cure/stop reflux. There are emerging techniques (i.e. Tif). Most important is proper evaluation followed by proper referral to skilled surgeon. http://goo.gl/0rrqv and http://goo.Gl/7zrht.
