Mouth breathing: You are probably breathing through your mouth at night which causes your tongue to dry out. The dryness makes your taste buds appear white. As soon as you close and let saliva bathe your tongue again, everything will appear normal.

Possible causes are: There are many things that can cause a coating on your tongue. Most often it is merely a plaque from bacteria, food debris, and dead cells. Some medications can also cause a buildup on the tongue. There are other, less likely conditions, such as lichen planus and fungal infections. In order to know for sure, it needs to be seen and diagnosed by a dentist.
