Oral Medication or : Laser treatment is the only way. It really does not matter what stage it is in. Once your nail is infected, topical medications will not work. See a podiatrist for treatment options and evaluation.

Keep in mind...: The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured. It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future. Oral antifungal medicines (lamisil), topical medications (formula 3), laser therapy, surgical removal, homeopathic applications (tea tree oil). Talk to a podiatrist for what will be best and most effective for you.

Several treatments.: The reason you hear so many different treatments for toenail fungus is because there is no perfect, sure-fire treatment that works 100% of the time. I've seen vaporub work, as well as other natural oil remedies, but rarely. You can also try laser therapy, antifungal creams, paints, or even oral medications if your doctor deems you healthy enough to take them.

Early toe fungus: When it is very mild, topical treatment can often be effective for nail fungus. Topical creams/gels and even prescription nail polish is to be effective in eradicating the fungus before it grows into a more moderate or severe condition.
