Many causes: When bile chemical composition (cholesterol, calcium bilirubinate, calcium carbonate) in the gallbladder gets out of balance, gallstones can form. While its not completely clear why some develop the chemical imbalance, we do know that gallstones are more common in obese people, women (especially oral contraceptives/hormone replacement), high fat intake, diabetes, rapid weight loss - to name a few.
