Often: Multiple sclerosis is unpredictable but often progresses (gets worse) over time. Fortunately, there are effective medications that can slow or stop the progression in the most common form of ms. (one form is harder to treat.) ms is best treated by a neurologist.

Certainly can occur: 85% of ms cases start with a relapsing-remitting form, and if untreated, 50% of these become secondary progressive at 10yrs, 90% at 20 yrs. This degenerative phase does not respond to the basic meds, and results in progressive disability. Our current potent meds do slow and/or stabilize most pts, and help prevent a worse outcome. Therefore, important to start early, and use effective meds.
