Depends: Simple, safe things include heat, cold, low-impact exercise (aerobic and back strengthening) should be tried first. Over the counter medications (acetaminophen, naproxen, ibuprofen) can be considered, but if you have any health problems (like high blood pressure, stomach or kidney problems), be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. Physical therapy, yoga or tai chi may help.

Local modalities: There are many different ways to soothe low back pain at age 60. Modalities can include ice and heat, over the counter analgesics and exercise. Ice and heat will not cure whatever is causing your pain, but they can provide temporary pain relief. One of the most important things patients can do when their back is sore is to try to stay active if possible.
