First, a bulging : Disc is a fairly normal finding. Treatment depends on correctly diagnosing the cause of pain. Most are treated non operatively. Lifestyle factors play a role like smoking, being overweight and not exercising regularly. Medication, time, activity modification play a role along with exercise for core strength, cardiovascular and flexibility. Only about 10% of disc problems need surgery.

Kind of: Many disc bulges resorb over time. If you have no neurologic deficit, conservative care and medication management may be enough to treat your discomfort.

Yes: Herniated (slipped) discs will often heal without surgery; surgery often helps but should be the last resort. Rest & time, physical therapy & anti-inflammatory drugs & herbs help, as can mind-body techniques & acupuncture. Healing back pain naturally: the mind-body program proven to work by art brownstein is a good book on the subject.
