Common, not normal: Grinding is very common, however it is not a good process. Your jaw wants teeth to come together evenly at a specific distance apart. When that does not happen is when people clench or grind. This action can fatigue the muscles and cause headaches. A custom nightguard can help because it resets the bite and distance. Otc nightguards are too thin and rarely fit well to help.

No: Headaches are not caused by too much sleep they are caused by your grinding. When grinding, you overwork your jaw muscles.Vessles can constrict, and headaches can result. See your dentist for an appliance to mitigate the problem. You will wake up more refreshed and headache free.

Options: Do you also grind your teeth at night? Clenching occurs during the day. A lot depends on the the history and diagnosis that you have received for your tmj/tmd. An oral mouthpiece may be indicated, but there are many types and often are constructed based upon diagnosis.
